Very simple tip, invest in a comfortable pair of riding boots. If that is not possible, a STURDY but comfortable pair of full coverage shoes. For those of you whose partners own bikes with pegs, and notice the arch of your foot hurts soooo bad after a bit, the boots Harley Davidson makes particularly for the passenger really really work!

Another piece of gear that is a must

While I just use a sturdy pair of hiking boots that seem to work just fine and were something I already had in my closet, one piece of gear we added mid way through our 4000 mile ride this year were cycling shorts - you know the kind the bicycle riders wear - they have great gel pads right where those bones get pounded on a rough road.
