Motorcycle Touring Made Easy - Header

When motorcycle touring solo, you have to rely on your skills and knowledge.

Motorcycle touring solo doesn't give you the advantage of another person's knowledge. That being said, you'll need to prepare that much more. It's all about making sure you cover all the basics.

How well are you at fixing your motorcycle if you should break down? If you need assistance, make sure you have manuals and tools. You may run into someone that can help if need be. Make sure too that a road side assistance plan is part of your "tool kit". And of course some way to communicate, cell phone don't work in all places so it's good to have a back up like a CB radio.

What happens if you go down on your bike, do you carry an adequate first aid kit? Do you know how to use it? Do you have a means of shelter if you are out riding through the desert or mountains? I know this all seems like overkill but my thought here is to just get you thinking and not just heading out on the bike saying "be back in  a couple days!"

Okay so let's all admit it, I think a good majority of motorcyclists, when riding solo, ride differently than if they have a loved one on the back. Weather it's giving the bike a bit more juice through a corner or just leaning a bit harder, most have a tendency to "enjoy" the performance more. Just remember you are the only pair of eyes on the road when solo. Pay close attention in corners for gravel and other road hazards. I know my wife is a great co-rider and we work together very well while riding. Helping each other through road hazards and traffic etc. If you are use to riding with a co-rider, you will definitely miss the extra help.

Slow speed riding while out on tour is something you'll come across now and again. If you are not use to riding at slow speeds then you should practice before you go. Also consider the weight distribution on your bike. This is where you really feel it. Having the weight up high will make it more difficult to handle the bike, so make sure to pack low and use a trailer if you have one.

All in all, if you are like most, you love getting out on your bike and riding, so enjoy the ride and make sure it's a safe one.
