Rain Gear

by Gary
(Gilbertsville, PA)

When on a long trip, it is inevitable that you will hit some rain (the "R" word). You might get lucky and not see a drop but in my 35+ years of riding, this would definitely be the exception. My advice, don't skimp on the rain gear. Buy the good stuff. I use Tourmaster and have been ver happy with it through the years. There are a lot of good brands out there - do your research. Avoid the "throw-away" junk that Wal-Mart and other discounters sell. Not even worth the $5 they get for it. Ask me how I know. ;) Getting wet is part of motorcycle touring. It's not all that bad if you are properly prepared.

Toggs
by: Brad Morgan

Frog Toggs are what i use most often because they are breathable and lightweight. During the hot summer months when you are most likely to get hit with the typical late afternoon thundershower - Frogg Toggs fit the bill because you can ride in comfort when its NOT raining and you have good protection when it does rain.

HOWEVER - I have found the Toggs do have their limitations - they will become compromised before other suits will, ususally after riding for more than 45 minutes of so in moderate to heavy rain they will start to be compromised on the leading edges. So - if you KNOW that you will definitely be riding in the rain for an extended period of time - I would recommend going with anonother option like the higher-end suits noted above.

That said - when Toggs do get compromised - they will dry-out as you ride. The breathability has its plusses and minuses. For riding through the occasional rain showers in the heat of the summer - the Toggs work best for me.

If I know I'm gonna be riding through a big storm or extended periods of rain - I don the Tourmaster suit.

I have a set of Frogg Toggs, and would not recommend them at all. Leaks thru the seams and pants ride up to high. Waste of money
